Beavers are an interesting and impressive species. Although they are native to Colorado and are beneficial to riparian and wetland ecosystems, their impact on the land is significant. By chewing trees and building dams, they have the ability to vastly change a landscape and issues can arise. Chewed trees near a trail can create serious safety hazards for visitors, and trees can be cut that we wish to protect. The goal of this project was to protect the remaining trail-side trees in a section of Sand Creek that has recently received heavy beaver activity. Wired fencing was installed around these trees, which will deter the beavers from chewing them, and encourage them to move on to a new area. This is a method that protects our trees without hurting the beavers in any way.
