APS Strengthens Social and Emotional Learning
Start Time (in seconds)
End Time (in seconds)

Aurora Public Schools has partnered with Playworks to increase opportunities for kids throughout the district to gain critical social and emotional skills through play, including at Sable Elementary. This new support will help address teacher burnout, the trauma kids have experienced during the pandemic, support making up for lost learning by making recess a valuable contribution to the school day, and supporting kids with their Social Emotional Learning and physical activity.

Playworks Colorado is leading the regional play movement. The nonprofit’s youth development programming, based in play, will serve 31 elementary schools in Aurora. Through onsite direct-service coaching and training of school faculty and staff, Playworks, which is part of a national nonprofit, integrates physical activity and social and emotional learning skill-building into organized activities during recess to create a space where students feel included, are active, and build valuable social and emotional skills needed to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Playworks partner schools see an increase in vigorous physical activity, decrease in bullying and discipline issues, and a reclaim in valuable learning time. Playworks Colorado impacts 25,000 kids.
