The City of Aurora has officially begun construction on a new 42,000-square-foot animal shelter that will replace its aging current facility built in the 1980s. The new shelter will provide space for up to 250 animals and include expanded adoption and foster areas, on-site veterinary services and outdoor play yards. Designed to better serve Aurora’s growing community, the $51.3 million project will enhance animal care, public safety and the overall resident experience. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2027, with the shelter opening to the public in 2028.
